Del Mar sits about twenty miles north of San Diego International — a twenty-five to forty minute drive in normal traffic, forty-five to sixty in the weekday peak. On a racing day or during the San Diego County Fair, add more again, because the traffic around the fairgrounds is its own weather system.
That last point is the one worth planning around. Del Mar is a small coastal town with a very large event venue inside it, and on the days that venue is busy the roads behave completely differently.

The comparison
| Option | Time | Typical cost | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked car or van | 25–40 min | Fixed fare | Race days, groups, fixed timing, luggage |
| Uber / Lyft | 25–40 min | $38–58 UberX | One or two people, ordinary days |
| Taxi | 25–40 min | Metered | No surge, long meter |
| Coaster train + ride | 70–100 min | Train fare plus transfers | Budget, light bags, weekdays |
| Rental car | 25–40 min | Daily rate + parking | Multi-day stays with driving planned |
Our flat fares from SAN to Del Mar start at $85 in a sedan, $112 in the 14-seat van and $122 in the lift-equipped ADA van. Indicative rates, confirmed before booking.
The racetrack changes everything
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club runs its main summer meet from roughly mid-July through early September, with a shorter autumn meet in November. The San Diego County Fair occupies the same fairgrounds from early June into early July. Between them, the site is busy for a good part of the year.
On those days, three things happen at once:
The roads into Del Mar back up. Via de la Valle and the Jimmy Durante Boulevard approach carry far more traffic than they were designed for, and the final mile of a twenty-mile journey can take as long as the previous nineteen.
Parking becomes the limiting factor. The fairgrounds lots fill, the overflow lots fill, and the walk from the last available space is long in July heat and dress shoes.
Rideshare surge spikes on the way out. Everybody leaves at once after the last race. That is the single worst moment of the day to open an app, and the pickup zones on a race day are congested enough that matching a driver can take twenty minutes.
The practical consequence: if you are going to the races or the fair, book the vehicle both ways, and book the return for a specific time. A booked car waiting where you agreed beats an app queue in a crowd of several thousand people with the same idea.
Where in Del Mar you are going
The town is compact but it has distinct parts, and the drop-off matters.
Del Mar Village. The walkable core along Camino Del Mar — restaurants, shops, the bluff overlooking the beach. L’Auberge Del Mar sits here.
The racetrack and fairgrounds. East of the village across the lagoon, off Jimmy Durante Boulevard. Different roads, different traffic, and on event days effectively a different town.
Del Mar Beach and Powerhouse Park. Below the village, with the long stretch of sand running north toward Dog Beach.
Carmel Valley and the Del Mar Heights corridor. Inland and uphill, along Del Mar Heights Road. Several hotels and a lot of business addresses sit here, including the Fairmont Grand Del Mar further inland again, which is a good fifteen minutes from the beach despite the name.
Torrey Pines. Technically south of Del Mar, but the reserve and the golf course are often part of the same trip.
Say which one when you book. The Fairmont Grand Del Mar and Del Mar Village are both “Del Mar” and they are twenty minutes apart.
Race-day dress, and why it matters logistically
Opening day at Del Mar is a genuine event — hats, suits, the whole thing. It is also usually in the high eighties.
Two practical consequences people discover the hard way. Walking a long way from a distant car park in that outfit, in that heat, is unpleasant — which is an argument for being dropped at the gate. And the day runs long, often into the evening with a concert after the last race, which means the return journey happens when everyone else is also leaving, tired, and frequently having had a drink.
A booked return at an agreed time solves both. It is also, for a group, cheaper than four separate surged rides out of a congested venue.
What it costs by group size
One-way from SAN to Del Mar, normal traffic, before surge.
| Travellers | Rideshare | Our flat fare | Per person, booked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2, light bags | One UberX, $38–58 | $85 sedan | $43 each at two |
| 3–4 with cases | One UberXL, $55–85 | $112 van | $28 each at four |
| 5–6 | Two vehicles, $95–145 | $112 van | $19 each at six |
| 7–10 | Three vehicles, $140–215 | $112 van | $11–16 each |
| 11–14 | Four vehicles, $190–290 | $112 van | $8–10 each |
For a race-day group — and race-day groups are usually six or more — the van is both cheaper and the only way the party actually arrives together.
The Coaster, for weekday travel
The Coaster commuter train stops at Solana Beach, which is the station for Del Mar, a couple of miles north of the village. From the airport that means a ride or bus into the Santa Fe Depot downtown, the train north to Solana Beach, then a short ride into Del Mar.
Seventy to a hundred minutes, two transfers, and the weekend and late-evening service is limited. On a weekday, travelling light, it is a reasonable and pleasant option. On a Saturday in August with luggage, it is not.
Worth knowing for race season: the Coaster has historically run extra services for Del Mar race days, which can make the train the smartest way in and out on exactly the days driving is worst. Check the current race-day timetable before you rely on it, because the schedule changes year to year.
When to book rather than request
Any race day or fair day. Both directions, and the return at a set time.
Groups of four or more. See the table — the crossover is early on this route.
Weddings and events. Del Mar does a lot of both. Fixed start time, formal clothes, everyone arriving together.
Early departures. A 7am flight means leaving Del Mar around 4.15am, which is the thinnest part of the rideshare day.
Golf trips. Torrey Pines and the Grand Del Mar bring golf bags, which do not reliably fit in a rideshare sedan.
Anyone who needs a lift or a child seat. Reserved, not requested. Our ADA van carries a hydraulic lift and four-point securement.
Getting back for your flight
From Del Mar, work backwards:
- Two hours at the airport for a domestic flight, two and a half with checked bags, three international
- The drive: twenty-five to forty minutes off-peak, forty-five to sixty in the morning southbound rush on I-5
- A 9am domestic flight on a weekday means leaving Del Mar at about 6am
The southbound morning commute from North County is heavy, and Del Mar sits inside it. Our departure timing guide covers this in more detail, including why the early-morning run is the one most often underestimated.
Booking the return on a race day
The outbound leg on a race day is easy. The return is the one that goes wrong, and it goes wrong the same way every time.
Everybody leaves at once. The last race finishes, or the concert after it ends, and several thousand people walk out of the same gates within twenty minutes. Rideshare surge spikes, the pickup zones are congested, and matching a driver takes considerably longer than usual because the app is trying to route a car into a crowd.
People have been drinking. Which is normal at a racetrack and is also why nobody should be driving.
The day runs longer than planned. The last race, then the concert, then one more drink. A return booked for 6pm is frequently wanted at 8.
Two ways to handle it, and both work better than hoping:
Book a specific return time and a specific meeting point. Not “the racetrack” — a named gate or a cross street away from the main exit crush. A driver who is already parked somewhere agreed beats an app searching in a crowd.
Or book hourly and let the vehicle wait. For a group of six or more this is usually the cheaper option anyway, and it removes the question of what time the day ends. Our hourly rates are $85 for a sedan and $110 for the 14-seat van, two-hour minimum.
Where the Del Mar hotels sit
Worth knowing because the name is used loosely across a wide area.
L’Auberge Del Mar. In the village itself, on Camino Del Mar, a short walk down to the beach. The closest thing to being in Del Mar proper.
Del Mar Inn and the village properties. Also in the walkable core.
The Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Inland, in Carmel Valley, about fifteen minutes from the beach despite the name. A resort in its own right rather than a base for the village.
Hilton and the Del Mar Heights corridor. Up the hill along Del Mar Heights Road, near the business parks. Convenient for the freeway, a drive from the beach.
Solana Beach properties. Just north, and the location of the Coaster station that serves Del Mar.
If you are booking a transfer, the difference between L’Auberge and the Grand Del Mar is a genuine fifteen to twenty minutes and two different exits off I-5. Give the hotel name.
Is a rental car worth it?
For a stay built around the village and the beach, usually not. Del Mar Village is walkable, parking on Camino Del Mar is limited and metered, and the beach lots fill early in summer. A car spends most of a Del Mar holiday parked at a hotel rate.
For a stay that includes the racetrack, Torrey Pines, the zoo and trips into San Diego proper, a rental starts to make sense — with the caveat that on race days you will wish you had not driven.
The middle path a lot of visitors end up on: transfers both ways, plus a booked vehicle for the race day itself, plus rideshare for short local hops.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Del Mar from San Diego airport? About twenty miles by road, a twenty-five to forty minute drive in normal traffic and forty-five to sixty in weekday peak. Race days and fair days add more.
How much is an Uber from San Diego airport to Del Mar? Typically $38 to $58 on UberX in normal conditions. Expect significantly more on race days, especially on the return journey when everyone leaves at once.
How do I get to the Del Mar racetrack from the airport? By road it is twenty to twenty-five miles depending on the route, and on race days the final approach is the slow part. A booked vehicle dropping at the gate avoids both the car park walk and the post-race app queue. The Coaster has historically run extra race-day services to Solana Beach — check the current timetable.
Is there a train to Del Mar from San Diego airport? Not directly. The Coaster stops at Solana Beach, the station for Del Mar, which means a ride into downtown, the train north, then a short ride in. Seventy to a hundred minutes with two transfers.
What is the best way to get a group to Del Mar for the races? A pre-booked van, both ways, with the return at an agreed time. Six or more people cannot fit in one rideshare vehicle, and the post-race surge is the worst of the day.
How early should I leave Del Mar for a morning flight? For a 9am domestic departure, leave by about 6am. The morning southbound commute on I-5 can add twenty minutes, and that sits on top of two hours at the airport.
Dropped at the gate, collected at an agreed time. Race days, fair days and ordinary days, at a fare quoted before you book. Book your Del Mar transfer or call dispatch 24/7 on +1 (619) 863-3842.
