Coronado is the closest major destination to San Diego International — about five miles, and in good traffic ten to twenty minutes. That short distance is also why people get it wrong. Five miles sounds like a trivial hop, so visitors assume any option will do. Then they meet the bridge at 5pm, or discover that the ferry does not take their luggage anywhere useful, or that the bus involves two changes with four suitcases.
Here is each option, honestly.
| Option | Range | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked van or car |

| Uber / Lyft |

The quick comparison
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked car or van | 10–20 min | Fixed fare | Groups, luggage, hotel arrivals, fixed timing |
| Uber / Lyft | 10–20 min | $18–30 UberX | One or two people, light bags, flexible |
| Taxi | 10–20 min | Metered, similar to Uber | Skipping the app; no surge |
| Ferry (via downtown) | 35–50 min total | Two fares | A scenic trip, not an arrival with bags |
| Public bus | 50–70 min | A few dollars | Lowest cost, no luggage |
SAN to Coronado starts at $59 in a sedan, $79 in the 14-seat van and $85 in the lift-equipped ADA van. One fare covers the whole vehicle, so a group of eight pays once rather than twice. Indicative rates, confirmed before booking.
The one thing that actually determines your journey: the bridge
Almost every road route to Coronado crosses the San Diego–Coronado Bridge. It is a single artery, and that makes the drive time far less predictable than five miles suggests.
Good conditions — mid-morning, mid-afternoon, most of the weekend — and you are at your hotel in ten to fifteen minutes.
Bad conditions — weekday evening peak, a Navy shift change, a major event on the island, a summer Saturday — and the same five miles can take thirty minutes or more. The bridge has no alternative to route around.
What this means practically: if you have a dinner reservation, a wedding, or a ship to catch, build the bridge into your plan rather than the mileage. A 25-minute buffer on this route is not excessive.
The other way onto the island is the long way round through Imperial Beach and up the Silver Strand — roughly 20+ miles. Nobody takes it from the airport unless the bridge is closed, but it is the reason a closure does not strand the island.
Rideshare: fine, with two caveats
For one or two people with carry-on bags, Uber or Lyft to Coronado is usually the cheapest sensible choice at $18–30 on UberX in normal conditions.
The caveats:
Surge is worst exactly when you need it. Sunday evening arrivals and the post-convention wave are when the multiplier bites, and a $22 ride becomes $45 without the distance changing.
You still have to get to the Transportation Plaza. Rideshare does not collect you at the kerb at SAN — all pickups go through the plazas in front of each terminal. With two toddlers or a wheelchair, that walk is the journey’s real difficulty, not the drive. We cover the plaza system in detail in our guide to rideshare pickup at SAN.
The ferry: lovely, and not an airport transfer
The Coronado ferry is one of the nicest things you can do in San Diego. It is a genuinely beautiful fifteen-minute crossing from downtown to Coronado’s Ferry Landing.
It is also not a way to get from the airport to your hotel. You need to get from SAN to the downtown terminal first, which is its own trip, then cross, then get from Ferry Landing to wherever you are actually staying — which on a large island is often another ride. Three legs, two fares, and a lot of lifting.
Do the ferry on day two, without the suitcases. It is worth it then.
Where you are actually going on the island
“Coronado” covers a fair amount of ground, and the right drop-off differs:
- Hotel del Coronado — the landmark on the ocean side, about 12–15 minutes from the airport in good traffic. Its own driveway handles arrivals well.
- Coronado Beach — a short distance beyond the Del; among the most consistently highly rated beaches in the country, and parking in summer is genuinely difficult, which is an argument for being dropped off.
- Coronado Island Marriott Resort — bay side, closer to the bridge, often the quickest arrival of the lot.
- Loews Coronado Bay Resort — further south down the Silver Strand, noticeably further than the rest. Budget an extra ten to fifteen minutes.
- Naval Base Coronado / NAB — gate access and ID requirements apply, and timing around shift changes matters. If you are travelling for duty or for a ceremony, tell your driver which gate.
- Orange Avenue — the main street, for restaurants, shops and the Coronado Playhouse.
When you book, give the actual hotel or address rather than “Coronado.” The difference between the Marriott and Loews is fifteen minutes of driving.
When a booked vehicle is the right call
For a short, cheap, flexible trip with light luggage, rideshare wins and we will say so. Book instead when:
You are a group. Five or more people means two vehicles on the apps — two fares, two drivers, and a group arriving in pieces at a hotel check-in desk. One van is one fare and one arrival.
You have a hard time. Weddings at the Del, dinner reservations, a ceremony on base, a ship sailing. The bridge is unpredictable and a booked vehicle leaves earlier to absorb it.
You are arriving late or leaving early. A 4:45am departure for a 6:30am flight is the thinnest part of the rideshare day.
Someone needs the lift, or a car seat. Accessible vehicles and fitted child seats are not things you can summon. They are things you reserve. Our ADA van carries a hydraulic lift and four-point securement.
You want the price fixed. Our fare is quoted before you book and does not move if the bridge does.
Getting back to the airport
The return trip is where more people come unstuck, because they plan it by distance. Leaving Coronado for a flight, work backwards:
- Five miles, but the bridge
- Plus the plaza or terminal kerb
- Plus bag drop and security at SAN
A sensible rule for a domestic departure: leave Coronado about two and a half hours before your flight, and add a further thirty minutes if you are travelling on a weekday evening or in summer. Our guide to departure timing from San Diego breaks this down by neighbourhood.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Coronado from San Diego airport? About five miles by road over the Coronado Bridge, which is ten to twenty minutes in normal traffic and can stretch to thirty or more at peak times.
How much is an Uber from San Diego airport to Coronado? Typically $18–30 on UberX in normal conditions. Surge during evening arrival waves or after large downtown events can push it considerably higher.
Can you take the ferry from the airport to Coronado? Not directly. You would need to travel from the airport to the downtown ferry terminal first, then cross, then continue to your destination on the island. It is a good excursion and a poor airport transfer.
How long does it take to get from San Diego airport to Hotel del Coronado? Usually 12–15 minutes in good traffic. Allow 25–30 at peak times, because the bridge has no bypass.
Is there a bus from San Diego airport to Coronado? Yes, but it involves connections and takes roughly 50–70 minutes. It is the cheapest option and the least suited to luggage.
What is the best way to get to Coronado with a group and luggage? A pre-booked van. Five or more passengers will not fit in a single rideshare vehicle, so the alternative is two cars, two fares and a split arrival.
Five miles, one bridge, no surprises. Fixed fare to any Coronado address, quoted before you book, with the bridge already built into the timing. Book your Coronado transfer or call dispatch 24/7 on +1 (619) 863-3842.
