How Early Should You Leave for San Diego Airport?

📅 October 6, 2026 ✍️ By Tariq

For a domestic flight, be at San Diego International two hours before departure. For an international flight, three. Then work backwards from there by however long the drive takes from where you are staying — which in San Diego depends far more on the hour than on the mileage.

Most people get the airport part roughly right and the drive part badly wrong. A trip that takes twenty minutes at 10am takes fifty at 5pm, and the mileage on the map does not change.

Upper end of each range. Peak is roughly 7–9am and 3.30–6.30pm. The northern coastal towns show the widest gap, because the route is I-5.

Start with the airport

SAN is a compact, busy airport on a single runway, and Terminal 1 has been through major construction. Two hours domestic and three international is the standard advice, and at SAN it is advice worth taking rather than trimming.

Add thirty minutes on top if any of these apply:

  • You are checking bags. Bag drop is the single most variable queue at any airport, and large groups multiply it.
  • It is a Monday morning or a Sunday afternoon. Business departures and weekend returns are SAN’s two reliable peaks.
  • It is a holiday weekend, or a large convention is ending downtown.
  • You are travelling with a group of six or more. Everything takes longer with a group, from loading the vehicle to clearing security.
  • You need special assistance, a wheelchair, or you are travelling with small children.

Now add the drive

These are realistic ranges, not best cases. The second column is what the same trip becomes in weekday peak traffic, roughly 7–9am and 3.30–6.30pm.

From Normal Peak
Downtown / Gaslamp 10–15 min 20–25 min
Coronado 10–20 min 25–35 min (the bridge)
Pacific Beach 15–25 min 30–40 min
Chula Vista 20–30 min 35–50 min
La Jolla 20–30 min 40–50 min
Del Mar 25–40 min 45–60 min
Encinitas 35–50 min 55–75 min
Carlsbad 40–55 min 60–80 min
Oceanside 45–60 min 70–90 min

The northern coastal towns are where the gap is widest, because the route is I-5 and I-5 southbound in the morning is the region’s busiest stretch. A Carlsbad to SAN run that takes forty minutes on a Sunday can take eighty on a Tuesday at 7.30am.

Putting it together: worked examples

9am domestic flight from La Jolla, a Tuesday. Two hours at the airport means being there by 7am. A 7am arrival means driving in the morning peak, so budget 45 minutes. Leave La Jolla at 6.15am.

2pm domestic flight from Coronado, a Saturday. At the airport by noon. Weekend bridge traffic is lighter but not nothing — budget 25 minutes. Leave Coronado at 11.30am.

6.30am domestic flight from Carlsbad. At the airport by 4.30am. The roads are genuinely clear at that hour, so 45 minutes is realistic. Leave Carlsbad at 3.45am. This is the trip people most often underestimate, and the one where rideshare most often fails.

7pm international flight from downtown, a Friday. Three hours means being there by 4pm, which puts the drive squarely in Friday peak. Budget 25 minutes. Leave downtown at 3.30pm.

The early-morning problem

Flights before 8am are the most common departures out of SAN and the hardest to arrange ground transport for.

The traffic is not the issue — at 4am the roads are empty and the drive is at its fastest. The issue is whether a vehicle exists. Rideshare supply at 4am is thin, surge is common because so few drivers are online, and a cancellation at that hour leaves you with no realistic fallback and a flight to catch.

This is the single clearest case for a booked vehicle. Not because it is nicer, but because a reservation is a reservation.

Early-morning airport transfers start at $49 in a sedan, $69 in the 14-seat van and $75 in the ADA van, with no night surcharge and no surge — a 4am pickup costs the same as a 10am one. Indicative rates, confirmed before booking.

Getting the return leg right too

Arrivals need planning as well, in the other direction:

  • Deplaning and baggage claim: 20–40 minutes from touchdown, more for a full widebody or an international arrival with immigration.
  • Getting to ground transportation: all rideshare at SAN goes through the Transportation Plazas rather than the kerb, which is a walk with bags. Our guide to rideshare pickup at SAN covers how that works.
  • A tracked booking moves with the flight. A scheduled rideshare request does not — if you land ninety minutes late, it has expired.

Situations that need more time than the standard advice

Wheelchair users and limited mobility. Airline assistance operates on its own schedule, and the distance from kerb to gate at SAN is real. Add a comfortable margin, and book a lift-equipped vehicle rather than hoping one is available. See our ADA van page.

Families with small children. Car seats to remove and carry, a stroller to gate-check, and a security queue with a toddler. Add thirty minutes and do not apologise for it.

Groups of six or more. One vehicle with everyone in it is dramatically simpler than three cars that leave together and arrive apart. Add time for loading, and add more if you are checking bags for all of them.

Cruise connections. A post-disembarkation flight on the same day is tight in both directions. Our cruise terminal guide sets out the timings.

A flight out of Tijuana via CBX. Different arithmetic entirely — the drive, the bridge and Mexican immigration all stack up. See our CBX guide.

The short version

Flight type At the airport Then add
Domestic, no bags 2 hours Drive time for that hour of day
Domestic, checked bags 2 hr 30 Drive time
International 3 hours Drive time
Group of 6+ 2 hr 30 – 3 hr Drive time plus loading
With accessibility needs 3 hours Drive time, booked vehicle

Frequently asked questions

How early should I get to San Diego airport for a domestic flight? Two hours before departure, or two and a half if you are checking bags, travelling in a group, or flying on a Monday morning or Sunday afternoon.

How early for an international flight from San Diego? Three hours. Add thirty minutes for a large group or if you need special assistance.

How long does it take to get to San Diego airport from Carlsbad? Forty to fifty-five minutes in normal conditions, and up to eighty in the morning peak on I-5 southbound. Early-morning runs are the fastest of the day.

How long from Coronado to San Diego airport? Ten to twenty minutes normally, but the Coronado Bridge has no alternative route, so allow twenty-five to thirty-five at peak times.

Is it worth booking a ride in advance for an early flight? For anything before about 7am, yes. Rideshare supply is at its thinnest, surge is common, and a cancellation at 4am has no fallback. A booked vehicle is an actual reservation.

What happens to my pickup if my flight is delayed? With a tracked booking, the pickup time moves with the flight at no extra cost. A scheduled rideshare request simply expires and you rebook at whatever the price is then.
